- For common seasonal ailments such as colds, fevers or sore throats, take symptomatic measures rather than antibiotics. You can take paracetamol if you have fever. You can try to reduce fever with the help of water at home. Placing a wet cloth on the head, wiping the body, pouring water on the head, even bathing—nothing is prohibited. These seasonal fevers are caused by viruses and antibiotics do not work against viruses.
- Do not take antibiotics unless prescribed by a doctor. Do not take antibiotics on the advice of the shopkeeper, because someone else has benefited from it, or because a doctor has previously prescribed it for similar symptoms.
- Antibiotics should be taken for the full duration once started. Cannot be stopped midway. Antibiotics should be continued for the prescribed number of days, even if symptoms are relieved. Again, it is not advisable to start another antibiotic quickly because it takes time to get relief while one antibiotic is running.
- Similar symptoms can occur due to various diseases. Therefore, it is not right for someone else to take the antibiotic used in the treatment of one person.
- Do not delay taking the antibiotic for too long after opening the packet. In case of children, once the bottle of antibiotic is opened, it is not advisable to keep it for later use in case of illness.
- Always be vigilant to prevent infection. Always maintain good habits like washing hands regularly, maintaining sneeze-cough etiquette, disposing of phlegm-spit and used tissues and handkerchiefs, covering food at all times. Avoid infection rather than taking antibiotics.
